Wine Making: A Hobby Sprung From Ancient Traditions Wine is among the most popular types of alcoholic beverages on the market today, just like it has been for many centuries. While some people have both the expertise and financial means to purchase many different types of wine, others prefer to take a more personalized route. For these people, wine making is an enjoyable hobby. Wine Making: The Process Before one considers undertaking the task of wine making, one should realize that wine making is a long process that requires much patience. Additionally, wine making must be attended to with a great degree of precision, since a person who is not paying attention during the wine making process might find the end result to be wine with a horrible taste. Perhaps the most daunting task of the wine making process is selecting the proper grapes to use. Vineyards must be diligent in caring for the many different types of wine grapes that exist, paying attention to climate and fertilization. The better a vineyard is cared for, the juicier the grapes, thus the most savory the wine. After the grapes have been harvested, they undergo the fermentation process. During fermentation, yeast changes the natural sugars in the juice of the grapes into alcohol. From start to finish, the entire fermentation process, which consists of two processes, takes about a week. Once the initial process of fermentation has been completed, the grapes then undergo a secondary process of fermentation. During this process, any leftover sugar particles from the first fermentation process are turned into alcohol, and the grape juice is filtered so that it now has a clear consistency. When the secondary fermentation process is complete, the newly created wine can go to one of two places. It can either be bottled, or it can be placed in large barrels (as has been done for centuries) to complete the aging necessary for excellent taste. While some bottles of wine have aged for over a hundred years, it is generally acceptable taste-wise to drink wine that is at least a year old. Wine making is indeed not for those who have little patience and little money. The machines needs for fermentation are expensive, and those who want to make money from the wine making process will have to wait years to make a suitable profit. However, for those that are diligent, have sufficient fund, and are doing it only for their own enjoyment, wine making can be a truly rewarding process.
